Sweater Weather

“There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” - Alfred Wainwright

To our delight, Westies never fuss about the weather! West Highland White Terriers naturally have a double coat which consists of two layers, a harsh outer layer referred to as their “jacket” and a soft undercoat. The undercoat lays next to the skin and regulates body temperature to help keep Westies cool and comfortable in the summer, and warm and mostly dry in the winter. Their jacket has also been selectively bred to repel dirt and protect the Highlander from getting stuck in brambles.

Westies are therefore very well equipped to handle a brisk winter walk without special clothing, and while they don’t necessarily need a sweater they do enjoy them and the feeling of being fussed over!

This year our little family has been incredibly spoiled by their talented grandma who generously hand-knitted them many beautiful sweaters!

We adore watching the “kids” choose their sweater for our outdoor adventures, and seeing their faces light up when we bring out their sweater basket. Sweaters are also excellent for preventing balls of snow from sticking on their little skirts while they bound along and off trails.

There are many different patterns available online for anyone interested in attempting your own. We recommend adult sizing to be 12” from shoulder blades to base of tail and roughly 16” around the chest (ribs).
