Dental Hygiene

Thankfully Westies have exceptionally large, strong healthy teeth! But the saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, most certainly applies to canine dental hygiene. As dogs age they become more susceptible to tartar and plague build up which left untreated may lead to gum disease, heart disease, halitosis (bad breath), sinus infections, and unsightly staining around the face and feet.

Your veterinarian may offer services including dental descaling, or in the case of senior dogs, dental extraction for the removal of unhealthy teeth. These services can be very beneficial, however it should be noted that these procedures are completed under a general anesthetic which has risks that cannot not be overlooked.

One of the most economical methods of maintaining your dog’s teeth and gums is regular brushing. We know, it’s a chore, but regular brushing combined with a healthy diet will ensure your best friend’s health and longevity.

Today we wanted to share with you a toothpaste recipe which is Westie approved and contains only 3 ingredients!

Coconut Peanut Butter Toothpaste

1/4 cup of pure organic coconut oil

1/4 cup of baking soda

1/2 teaspoon of peanut butter

Blend well and add more or less of each ingredient until you are satisfied with the paste-like consistency. We recommend refrigerating in an airtight jar to maintain freshness.
