Supplements

We recently stumbled upon a recipe for molding small coconut oil based treats for maintaining healthy skin, nails and coat. Although our Westies already have a well balanced diet, we thought we would give these a try!

Not only did our Westies enjoy these little treats, but these nicely complimented and hydrated a dry kibble diet. To prevent gastrointestinal changes we limit these supplemental treats to once daily.

Made with only 3 simple ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (100% pure peanut butter with no additives*)

  • 1/4 cup pumpkin (100% pure pumpkin**)

Easy to blend together with a spoon and scope into silicone molds. We prefer to store these little treats by freezing them to maintain their shape and freshness.

We used silicone molds which bakers use for chocolates as these contain approximately one teaspoon or less of volume. Our Westies also enjoy some gelatin treats in these molds and they are great investment if you enjoy cooking or baking! Gelatin based treats are fantastic supplements for dogs as they are comprised of collagen to maintain healthy digestion, teeth and bones.

*Be sure to use only 100% peanut butter with no additives as Xylitol is added to some peanut butter brands as a sweetener which is toxic to dogs.

**If using canned pumpkin ensure you select the pureed 100% pure pumpkin and not pie filling.
